Description
An impressive evening view of Tower Bridge. Built between 1886 and 1894, it was designed by Sir Horace Jones and Sir John Wolfe Barry. The bridge is about 800ft (244m) long between the abutment towers and 200ft (61m) between the massive Gothic towers that rise from the river and are connected near the top by a footway. the central span of the carriageway consists of twin bascules or drawbridges, each weighing about 1000 tonnes, which can be raised in a minute to allow the passage of large vessels.
