Extensive notes on front and back endpapers and half-title and concerning Grant and Twain's financial problems, their friendship, their personal lives, important Civil War victories for Grant, similarities between the Huckleberry Finn's trip down the Mississippi river and Grant's own trip down the Mississippi as a general, Grant's terminal illness, the financial arrangement between Grant and Twain over publishing the former's memoirs, Grant's religious beliefs, visitors to Grant's deathbed, Twain's last visit to Grant, Grant's friendship with General William T. Sherman, and Grant as a writer. Annotations by Brian Lamb in the margins and underlining of pertinent phrases throughout the book.
