Transcription of Annotations
Extensive notes on front and back endpapers and half-title concerning the author's family life, educational and military background, religious beliefs, and professional experiences in working for the Kennedy and especially the Johnson administrations. The notes also cover the author's time as the General Counsel to the Democratic National Committee, as United States Secretary of Health, Education, and Welfare under President Carter, and as the founder of the National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse. Examples include: "Catholic education - One True Church," "an air of invincibility with McNamara," "prostate cancer - radiation treatments," "my conviction on use of pill," "I came to doubt the integrity of many judges," "LBJ felt Castro killed Kennedy - I have come to the share LBJ's view," "Poseidon for Polaris II," "I never spoke out publicly against the war. I knew pain it would cause LBJ," "we're celebrities," "I resigned from counsel of DNC," "Spiro Agnew," "Ted Kennedy - tells me I should resign over health costs," and "I left HEW disturbed by the power of special interests." Annotations by Brian Lamb in the margins and underlining of pertinent phrases throughout the book. Examples include: "Legion of Decency," "church teachings doubt," "JFK and LBJ," "failure to provide air cover," "But at times we used questionable mans to achieve our noble ends," "Carter to Oval Office," and "getting to know love, serve God better."
