Extensive notes on front and back endpapers, provides a chronology of events in Hawthorne's life, the birth dates of his sister and brother-in-laws, the death dates of Hawthorne's children, details of his romantic relationships and marriage, financial problems, inspiration for the Scarlett Letter, friends, temperament, and views on the Civil War and Abraham Lincoln. Annotations by Brian Lamb in the margins and underlining of pertinent phrases throughout the book. Examples: "delicate health," "a voracious reader," "concealed affair," "Emerson, Thoreau, Longfellow," and "H. ill again."
