Transcription of Annotations
Front endpapers and half title page include notes on historical events in Russia during the first half of the 20th century - the abdication of the Tsar in 1917, the resulting savage civil war, Stalin's terror famine with its peak in 1933, collectivization, the purges ordered by Stalin, and World War II during which 27 million Russians perished. Also mentioned is the notorious Lubyanka prison. Other notes contain biographical information on Khrushchev, his family, and his marriages. Two secrets about Khrushchev are noted: he started out as aTrotskyite, and his second marriage was to 17 year old Marusia. Notes on the back endpapers refer to the Soviet Union's relationship with Cuba, Castro's visit in Moscow during which a shouting match between the two leaders erupted, and Khrushchev's loathing of modern art. These questions and statements are also part of the notes: "How much film did you look at - New Year's Eve Party?" - "Story of woman eating [her] own children in Ukraine" (p. 200). - "K. was "incredibly crude" (p. 224) - "How many psychiatrists did you consult regarding Stalin and K.?" -- Annotations by Brian Lamb in the margins and underlining of pertinent phrases throughout the book.
