Philadelphia public schools 33 years. Parenting--10 years ago "A Nation at Risk." 13 million children living in poverty. What is homework to a child who nursed his mother through an overdose the night before? MLK shot--Riots. White flight. Caddy. As child wanted to be a teacher. 11 children. John Berger slave. White & Black--grandmother white. Mother worked as a chambermaid, father in Steel Mill. Used clothing. Shoes. Divorce. Mother kidnapped kids. Father kidnapped her back. Learned to read after third grade. High standards. Taught negro history/racial pride. When returned to Pittsburgh, refused to go back to 6th grade. Went to West Chester State College. Summer job in NY City in a bar and grill. End of junior year summer job in Nantucket as a housekeeper. Hated bell. Nigra. Teaching 1959 Morton McMichael Elementary School, Philadelphia. Went to student homes. Eddie--hit children, she threatened and did hit him, he changed his behavior. Brought students home. Whites v. Blacks. Discipline. White teachers hid from Vietnam War. 1966 Blaine new $1.6 million facility. Mr. Lowe--NTA non-teaching assistant. Test scores too good. Roaches. Scrubbed floors to get rid of urine. Touching.
