Transcript of Annotations
Front endpapers contain notes on important events in the history of Cambodia since 1953 when this former French colony became independent - the fall of Prince Sihanouck's government in 1970, the ensuing rivalry between Lon Nol, who was backed by the U.S., and the Khmer Rouge who won and took over the country in 1975. Other notes characterize the conditions under the Khmer Rouge - the author's family had to go into hiding, they were relocated three times, were forbidden to wear colorful clothing and were not allowed to practice their religion. Capitalism and the West were denounced. In June 1980, the family found a sponsor and was able to leave for America. These questions and statements are also included in the notes: "How do [you] remember all the dialogue when you were five?" -- "What was the impact of your light skin?" -- "Do you have extra sensory perception?" -- "What's a Met Bong?" -- "I will kill Pol Pot?" -- "Ma was born in China." -- "It is true you like to start fights." -- Annotations by Brian Lamb in the margins and underlining of pertinent phrases throughout the book.
