Front end papers, fly leaf and half-title contain list of Rockefeller assets, family background, early partnership, hired a substitute for the Civil War, railroads, Standard Oil. religion, author's reaction to Random House request for Rockefeller biography, harsh business vs. conservative morals, "Success comes from keeping the ears open and the mouth closed", Ida Tarbell, Gilded Age, govt. /business relationship, 1892 individual controlled majority of stock in 20 companies, "what was oil originally used for--when was the auto invented?", Panic of 1893 awakened Rockefeller to public responsibilities of wealth. Henry Demarest Lloyd--wealth against commonwealth, passed out D.C. politicians--4 printings--Atlantic Monthly, 1897 Rockefeller walks away from empire. 1893 alopecia, Rockefeller's daily habits, 1904 stroke, Tarbell stories, Sherman Antitrust Act, created U. of Chicago, wanted to live to 100, in later years became ribald and "old rooster". Junior more liberal, contributed to Riverside Church, Grand Teton National Park, Versailles..."What were railroad rebates--were they illegal?" Lloyd and Tarbell expose led to the breakup of Standard Oil. Notes/underlining's concerning Rockefeller's background, dropped out of high school, moved to Cleveland, OH, began working 26 Sept. 1855. Kept books, paid bills, collected debts, fear of excess, Christian life, Civil War--banks, debit, Black Friday, relationship with his parents and siblings, University of Chicago, the 1893 Depression, wealth, health, children, charitable trusts, later years.
